Taking Liberties Launches on 15 October!

Open to the public from 15 October at The Foundry in London, Taking Liberties: Detention, Reporting and Resistance is a new exhibition exploring the ways in which immigration detention and reporting deprive people of their freedom, rights and autonomy.

Join us for the Launch!

You are invited to join us for the Taking Liberties exhibition launch event on 15 October from 6pm. Registration is free but space is limited—please sign up here!

The launch event will be an opportunity to experience the exhibition for the first time, take part in guided tours from the curators and contributors, and celebrate the creativity, resilience and resistance that have shaped this project.

About the Exhibition

Led and curated by people with firsthand experience of the immigration system, the exhibition challenges the narratives and policies that dehumanise, isolate and criminalise people because of their immigration status. Centring the leadership, creativity and experiences of people directly affected, Taking Liberties explores the human impact of the immigration detention and reporting as well as the many ways people resist and create change.

The exhibition includes infographic panels, short films, first-hand audio testimonies, protest photography, personal artefacts, artwork from the community (including winners selected from submissions to our open call for artwork), all offering personal perspectives on the system and how communities are resisting.

More than a space for learning, Taking Liberties creates opportunities to grow networks and amplify resistance.

The exhibition is open to visit Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm at The Foundry in Vauxhall. The launch event on 15 October is open to the public—sign up here. We are also running bespoke events where you can hear from the curators, take part in creative activities and learn about how you can get involved. Sign up to our mailing list here to be the first to hear about the events.

About us

The exhibition is led by a steering group of people with experience of detention and reporting and is facilitated by Bail for Immigration Detainees and Migrants Organise (through our Abolish Reporting campaign). We are extremely grateful to Ben & Jerry’s Foundation Fund, a fund of Tides Foundation for funding this work and to The Foundry and the Equalities Work team for hosting us.

Migrants Organise is proud to be part of Taking Liberties, which builds on previous exhibitions from our Abolish Reporting campaign in collaboration with Bail for Immigration Detainees (such as Stop Watching Us! 2022). The Abolish Reporting campaign is organising for a world built on principles of care, not surveillance. Get in touch for support organising locally to Abolish Reporting, or check out resources to challenge reporting.
