Taking action against the earned settlement proposals

Our members recently joined hundreds of people- from grassroots organisations to unions- to take action against the government’s “earned settlement” proposals.

It’s estimated that 1.35 million people already living and working in the UK could be plunged into protracted limbo because of these new rules.

We know there is huge resistance to these proposals- in parliament and on our streets. Our member organiser, Nanou, shares more about taking action against “earned settlement” and how you can speak out to:

On Wednesday, the 13th of March 2026, I had the honour of speaking with Olivia Blake, Labour MP, and Hannah Spencer, newly elected Green Party MP, during a mass lobby against the earned settlement proposals at Parliament.

The Government’s proposal to extend waiting periods for migrants to secure settlement risks pushing families into deeper insecurity. Long periods without a stable status can harm mental health, disrupt children’s education, and make it harder to work, rent a home, or plan for the future.

Everyone, regardless of nationality, has the right to speak to their MP to raise their concerns. You don’t need to be an expert; you only need to share what feels safe.

It’s estimated that 300,000 children could be affected by these proposals. No child should grow up in poverty because of immigration rules. When families have secure status, they are able to work, pay taxes, and fully contribute to society.

I’m calling on MPs to pause these plans, assess their real impact on children and families, and ensure any changes are properly debated in Parliament. We all deserve a system that is fair, affordable, compassionate, and clear.

Families across the UK are raising their voices. Stability and dignity matter for people in our community.”

A special shout out to our friends South London Refugee Association who showed up with us, and to Praxis for leading the day. You can email your MP to share speak out against these proposals. Say no to Earned Settlement!
