It’s always an exciting day in our office when a member gets their refugee status. We rush to hug each other, drinks are made and treats are shared.
This day should represent a whole new chapter in someone’s life; a chapter of safety and protection.
Nobody tells you this, but this chapter is also incredibly difficult. And, it’s getting harder.
That’s why we’re opening up our Solidarity Fund to resource our frontline work, including the work we do with newly recognised refugees.
Punishing Protection
New rules from the government are making things tougher for people who have just received refugee status. They are punishing people for seeking freedom and protection.
For example, this government has shortened the amount of time a person had to “move on” from asylum accommodation – leading to homelessness.
They’ve also placed a ban on people reuniting with their family members; stripping people of community, connection and love.
What should be a period of relief and stability, is replaced with protracted loss.
In the context of escalating political hostility, it’s vital that we build community based responses to meet these challenges.
Since September, our team has paid for over 100 nights of emergency accommodation so that newly recognised refugees do not have to sleep rough.
We’ve also helped people overcome practical barriers to daily life like opening bank accounts, accessing financial support and looking for work.

Every pound donated helps to continue this vital work for our community. If you’re able to, will you donate or share the link to our Winter Solidarity Fund today?
While we organise to change unjust systems in the long term, we need to show up for people currently subjected to the hostile environment.
Whether or not you can chip in today, we want to thank you for being with us in the fight for migrant justice.
