As the world turns its attention to the unfolding and devastating war in the Ukraine, our demand for a fair immigration system based on dignity, welcome and justice grows in urgency.
Yet the current UK system- the Hostile Environment- is a system of disbelief, detention and deportation. And, it’s about to get a whole lot worse.
The Nationality and Borders Bill – currently making its way through Parliament- will put migrant and refugee lives at risk by making it harder for people to reach safety. It will embolden the culture of disbelief already prevalent in our asylum system. It will expand the already cruel hostile environment policies leading to suffering and destitution whilst also threatening the citizenship of millions of British people.
The Nationality and Borders Bill is violent and inhumane by design and must be scrapped in its entirety.
Today, in solidarity with all people who are fleeing violence, conflict, war and persecution we call for an expansion of safe resettlement programmes, whilst simultaneously calling for a just and accessible system for all people seeking protection.
We demand a system that ends the criminalisation of refugees and one that enables refugee communities to rebuild their lives with dignity not destitution. We demand the end of detention, the end of warehousing migrants and refugees in makeshift camps, and an end to outsourcing migration control to private for-profit companies with poor human rights records and a lack of accountability.
