We launched on Saturday the 2013 Migrant & Refugee Woman of the Year Award at this year’s TEDxEastEnd in east London. TEDx is known for presenting innovative and challenging talks that are ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. We participated in the event because TEDxEastEnd has in the past celebrated the work of innovative migrant women and this was our chance for two great projects to join up for something bigger.
The Migrant & Refugee Woman of the Year Award aims to recognise and celebrate women who having migrated or fled persecution themselves, find time to provide essential support and inspiring leadership at grassroots level to others attempting to start a new life in the UK. Migrating to a new country brings many challenges and it is often women who step forward and find solutions on behalf of a wider group and help more vulnerable members of the community. They fight for equality, challenge prejudice and come up with innovative, practical and strategic solutions for those in need and all while working, studying and raising families.
The awards were set up in 2012 and presented for the first time at a ceremony hosted by the Royal Festival Hall on March 8th, 2012, as part of London’s International Women’s Day celebrations. The overall winner was Nazek Ramadan and two honorary awards were made to Clara Osagiede and Luljeta Nuzi.

This year’s winners will be presented with their awards at a high profile ceremony on or close to International Women’s Day. Their communities or organisations receive a donation to spend on community work as they see fit and the individuals are offered mentoring support.
