Good Practice Guide In Accessing Health

The Forum

In 2009-2010, this unique project coordinated by MRCF brought together six BME community organisations to address the recommendations of the Primary Concern report by the BME Health Forum.

This project aimed to increase migrants’ and refugees’ knowledge of accessing and using health services. It also worked with organisations to engage and develop relationships with GP and dental practices.

During the first stage, 300 BME patients were surveyed about their knowledge and experiences of primary care. Each organisation recruited 15 members as a control group (totalling  90 people) to monitor the interventions which included advocacy, signposting, referrals and interpreting.

The second stage resulted in the publication of Fact Cards and Good Practice Guides to Interpreting. The information gathered during the first stage was used to create these tools with the aim of presenting information that specific communities needed.
